FISH CREEK to FOSTER

This is one of the steepest sections of the Rail Trail. Start with a climb through the pine trees, where outstretched branches meet above the Trail.

The landscape transforms into almost a rainforest feel. The Trail is flanked by embankments, with leaf litter speckling the Trail from the thick canopy overhead. Your climb is rewarded with gob-smacking views over Corner Inlet towards Wilsons Promontory, especially at the Hoodle Range Lookout.

Once you've soaked in the view, enjoy the downhill stretch on your search for Foster. Just before reaching the town, reward your active pursuits with a crisp traditional English cider. Your final highlight is the crossing of lovely Stockyard Creek alongside remnants of the original trestle bridge. From here, it is a short glide to the grassy Foster Station Park, 1.5 kilometres south of the town centre.

Craft your own adventure

Art galleries, studios and craft stores sit shoulder-to-shoulder in this bite-sized village. The main street boasts a collection of cute weatherboard shopfronts that add to the towns charm.

The Rail Trail passes through the centre of town, where you can rest a while at the sheltered picnic area.

Foster

Over the hills, not so far away

Set amongst rolling hills and bushland, Foster is filled with leafy parks and green spaces. A short 1.5 kilometre detour will drop you in the town centre, where your efforts will be rewarded with a scene brimming with cafes, retail stores, galleries and a museum.

The town is just a hop, step and a jump to the jaw-dropping Wilsons Promontory National Park and pristine South Gippsland coastline.

WHILE YOU’RE IN FOSTER

You’ll have your pick of places for a meal, from classic pub fare, cafe brunches, fish and chips or bakery goods.
Wander the streets and browse through the specialty stores.
Learn more at the Visitor Information Centre and while you are there, view the current exhibition at the gallery.
Discover Pearl Park, a leafy oasis with a charming bridge over Stockyard Creek.
Check out the Foster Flora Reserve – a great place to enjoy a number of short walks.
